Golfing with God
Scott and Grace Buchanan
Scott and I are beginner golfers although we have had a couple lessons just for fun. We asked last week that God would use us to touch a life when we went out to play a round of golf.
We arrived at a golf course just designed for beginners and there was an 18 year old college student starting out, just getting credits for a college gym class. We thought he must know more than we do so we decided to follow him. I realized it must be our divine appointment!
We had no putter and Kevin had two so he gave us one to use. We asked him questions about his life and college and family. It was a beautiful day and all three of us were equally bad at the game but we enjoyed the whole experience and the beautiful day.
I jumped in and told him a little bit about how I met Scott in high school when he put an ad in our school newspaper saying if anyone wanted to talk about Jesus to come at lunch time to a room in the school. I told him it has been a wonderful and amazing journey since then. We also shared some personal stories about our lives and my husband gave him some good life advice.
We did not want to make him feel uncomfortable so we just encouraged him in his golf efforts and kept our conversation light until after the 9th hole. Then I asked him if we were the first people to ever tell him that Jesus loves him. He said no. All of a sudden his face softened and he told us that just a week ago he was wondering if God was real. He was playing golf very badly and he asked God that if God was real to help him with his golf.
He had several much better shots and then he hit an amazing hole in one! So then I said, “And now God sent us to tell you He loves you!” Scott asked him if there was a particular desire he had. He said no. I asked him if he would just like God to surprise him and he said yes. So Scott and I agreed that God would surprise him with something good in the next week and we parted ways.
